First time out in three weeks.

Fished from 7:30-noon.  5-5, 3 bass and 2 stockers.  Lap round Fisher's Knob and a lap round big water.  No pattern - One fish on a diver at 75, rigger at 29, 7 color, 10 color and 150 CU - all different spoons.

Was just reviewing my records.  For the last seven seasons, I have averaged about 15% bass bycatch with a high of 18% and a low of 9%.  This year I'm running at 41% with the number of trout dropping each year.

Not looking good.

I have fished Watauga some over the last few years (I live about halfway in between Jocassee and Watauga) and it’s a good lake for trout. Has a good population of lake trout along with rainbows and browns, the only lake I know of in the area with lakers. I’m no expert, but I think the lake trout like a slow presentation. I also troll Jocassee a few times a year but haven’t been in a while.

I think it is a combination of high loon pressure and the increase of spotted Bass. #stockmoretrout #troutstamp #buildanotherhatchery

Ray,

I  not seeing as many loons there this year as in past.  Definitely think that spots have had an adverse affect on the trout.  Not sure the answer is just an increase in trout stocking without some control on the exploding spot population.

There are areas where we would routinely catch large numbers of trout that seem completely void of them now.  I had a area that I could almost guarantee a trout and now have not caught one there in two years.  Now it is a bass every time.  Not sure if the bass are just beating the trout to the bait or the trout are no longer there.

We come to Jocassee specifically to catch trout and that is becoming more rare.  One of the reasons I troll fast is to avoid the bass, but that is not keeping the bass off my stuff.  Guess maybe I should be thankful for them because we are already pretty slow trolling and without the bass its, it would be 3-4 hours between fish.

The Spots have an advantage in that the big ones can eat trout, and they are very effective school feeders. I am still all for a spot trolling tournament. I also wonder how many Stripers have been stocked. There are a lot of stories about people putting them in (recently). Personally I would like to see some Tiger Musky stocked #fishingdreams

After the spots and loons get done that will leave about 10 fish. This Saturday will be the decision point for us as far as returning for April, and next year.

I checked with DNR, they put in 15k browns, and 15k rainbows.
I will be up there Saturday running the Friends of Jocassee Bass tournament. $50 entry, blast off at safelight. Sorry no trolling. Weight in at 3PM
